Jeanerette, LA – September 22, 2020: USA-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has entered the recreational yacht market with its first M48, a 48-meter by 12-meter (158’ by 39’) aluminum catamaran expedition yacht.

The vessel is Metal Shark’s first build from the company’s new “Metal Shark Yachts” division, which has introduced an entirely new line of high-speed, long range catamaran models ranging from 30 to 70 meters (100’ to 231’) in length.

M48 is the first private recreational yacht built by Metal Shark, a diversified builder of aluminum and steel vessels for military and commercial operators worldwide. The vessel bears the distinction of being one of the largest purpose-built aluminum catamarans ever made, and is also notable for being built in the United States, constructed from start to finish at Metal Shark’s Franklin, Louisiana shipyard.

The three-decked welded-aluminum M48, named “Magnet,” features design work completed by Metal Shark’s in-house engineering team utilizing an Incat Crowther catamaran hull form optimized for maximum speed and range. The vessel is powered by twin 2,600-horsepower MTU Tier III diesel engines and boasts a globe-spanning 11,000 nautical mile range at a 10-knot cruise, with reserve. In underway trials the new craft has reached top speeds in excess of 23 knots.

M48’s chiseled and imposing appearance incorporates angular styling cues inspired by Metal Shark’s military patrol vessels, which are designed to achieve modern naval visual deterrent requirements. Hardware is rugged and overbuilt. Exposed architectural elements and an industrial-grade finish, designed for extended operation with minimum maintenance, combine to convey the vessel’s no-nonsense mission.

Thanks to its wide catamaran footprint, the 650 ITC gross ton M48 offers a significant increase in deck space compared to a traditional monohull yacht of comparable length, creating vast spaces for entertaining along with ample storage space for tenders, toys, or other payloads. A 5,000 lb.-capacity submersible stern platform and a ______ lb. aft deck crane easily launch, retrieve, and stow tenders, subs, toys, and other cargo.

Machinery spaces, crew quarters, refrigerated storage, a wine cellar, and a complete work shop are all accommodated belowdecks within the twin catamaran hulls, opening up all three decks for owners and guests. On the main and mid decks, the elevated interior imparts the feel of a high-end city apartment as opposed to the far more enclosed spaces of a typical yacht. Panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and minimalist understated finishes put the emphasis on the journey, with occupants enjoying airy, uncluttered surroundings while surrounded by near 360-degree views of the outside environment.

A vast upper-level sun deck, generously appointed with wraparound seating and lounges, grills, prep stations, and serving areas, also features a forward flybridge which offers outstanding visibility from its elevated position. A large flybridge roof provides shelter and accommodates an integrated 12-panel solar power generation array, while a spacious aft lounge area beckons sun lovers.

As configured for the client, Magnet accommodates two owners plus six guests and a crew of seven. However, each offering in the Metal Shark Yachts lineup may be fully customized to suit the unique requirements of the owner and depending on configuration M48 can accommodate additional passengers.
